AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR THE BLIND INVITED TO JOIN PRESIDENT CLINTON FOR THE NEXT STEP TOWARD REDUCING THE "DIGITAL DIVIDE"

Today, Thursday, September 21, AFB president Carl Augusto will be with President Clinton in Flint, Michigan as part of Clinton's initiative to bridge the digital divide. This stop will highlight the importance of ensuring that new information and communications technologies are accessible to and usable by the 54 million Americans with disabilities.

On the way to Michigan aboard Air Force One, Carl will have a one on one opportunity with President Clinton to stress AFB's goal of a full commitment from the technology industry to ensure equal and independent access to information for people who are blind or visually impaired

At their first stop in Flint, the President, Carl and the press will see demonstrations of model programs that provide access to cutting-edge technology to people with disabilities. Janina Sajka, AFB's director of Information Systems Research & Development, will demonstrate an initiative of Time-Warner Trade Publishing and AFB to release to the general public the first commercial title using the NISO/DAISY publication format. This exciting, new, innovative electronic book technology—developed in the blindness community—promises to revolutionize reading and literacy for all people worldwide, including people who are blind or have a print disability.

Time-Warner selected Dr. Martin Luther King's "A Call to Conscience" speech as its first title in this format that enables readers to see the text of the book displayed on screen or in braille fully synchronized with the audio of Dr. King and a professional narrator.

Carl Augusto will continue with the President to their second stop in Flint where Clinton will announce concrete actions by the government and the private sector that will help ensure that people with disabilities are full participants in the Information Age. The American Foundation for the Blind and Time-Warner Trade Publishing will be cited by Clinton for our leadership toward accomplishing that goal.

Congratulations for facilitating AFB's and Time-Warner's participation with The White House go to Alan Dinsmore and Paul Schroeder of AFB Governmental Relations, Janina Sajka, and Jim Veltman of AFB Talking Books.

PLEASE WATCH THE NATIONAL NEWS FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON THIS PROUD MOMENT FOR AFB AND THE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED COMMUNITY.
